Nutrition Interventions for Children with Special Needs

This guide was produced by the Washington State CSHCN Nutrition Network. The main purpose of this tool is to provide a resource for those involved in the monitoring or delivery of nutritional care for children with special health care needs. It is intended to serve as a framework for developing and providing nutritional screening, assessment and intervention as routine components of comprehensive health care for children with disabilities or chronic illnesses. The guide is divided into (3) sections:

  1. Determination of Nutritional Status - Screening and Assessment along with steps to take in developing a nutritional care plan.
  2. Problem Based Nutrition Intervention - Addressing nutrition related problems
  3. Condition Specific Nutrition Interventions - Nutrition management related to specific diagnosis and conditions that have strong nutrition components.
