Special Needs Gift Guide
Tips for buying toys for children with special needs in a Parentmap Dec. 2005 article. The article includes links to Good to Grow which is designed to help specialty toy stores and their customers match toys to children with special needs. Through this program, occupational therapists from the Washington Elks Therapy Program for Children have tested several hundred toys with kids with disabilities and recorded their observations and ratings. Each toy is evaluated based on criteria including how open-ended it is, whether it can be used in various settings and from a range of positions, and -- of course -- the fun factor. The therapists' recommendations are viewable by retailers and customers on the Good to Grow Web site (www.goodtogrowtoys.com).
